Lavandula

A curious plant life form that is comprised of densly packed whorls of leaves and petals, holding small spikes that rise above the foliage, making contact with the creature painful and potentially harmful. The creatures are very aromatic and typically are covered with bees and other pollinating species of insect. They derive from a “mother” plant (a quite large but otherwise nondescript shrub) that is traditionally rooted (preferring well-drained, sandy soils) but which creates large clumps of dense material that form into Lavandula that eventually bud off. Most humanoids find the Lavandula’s distinctive aroma pleasant, tending toward overwhelming at close range. Lavandula produce large amounts of oily resin that accumulates at joints and occasionally drips off the organism. Skin contact with the resin usually causes severe irritation and rash. Flowering petals that are clipped or removed from the organism can be dried and then safely consumed though it has a strong flavor.

The Lavandula contains many thousands of seeds which they routinely shed as they move about. If these seeds germinate they grow into another “mother” plant. Once all of their seeds are distributed they soon die. When a Lavandula is about to experience a natural, non-violent, death they will typically eject all incorporated components and arrange them into some type of geometric pattern. These will ocassionally be supplemented with flowers and resins from their own form. Some people feel this is a type of rudimentary religious function.

Lavandula traditionally are mobile during sunlight but dormant during darkness, when they will partially bury themselves in soil. They prefer to remain near sources of fresh water and will not willingly travel more than an hour or so from known sources. They do not eat, instead deriving sustenance from sunlight and fresh water.

Telepathy, ESP, and similar mind probing methods will fail to discern any intelligence in a Lavandula, though their behavior suggests a crude type of cunning. They commonly incorporate encounterd hard materials such as metals or stones into their form to boost their structural durability. Likewise, they may incorporate spikes or sharp objects into their form to boost their defensive durability. They do not attack but may defend themselves with partial success. Large amounts of their structure can be lost without significantly impairing their abilities.

Clark wins a PDF of the Crimson Dragon Slayer.
